Brighton Theatre Group and its subsidiary company Brighton Theatre Group Youth prides itself in producing quality musical theatre productions heralded as “West End Grade” with “Professional Quality Production Values”.
Creative quality is the modus operandi of the company which is achieved by cross-discipline excellence from both its performers and creative teams where a collaborative approach to learning and skill improvement is central to its core values.

Our Story

For almost 50 years Brighton Theatre Group has provided theatrical opportunity to the people of Brighton & Hove and throughout Sussex. An inclusive community based company it has seen the launch of many “West End” careers as well as a winner of Britain’s Got Talent.
Founded on 2nd May 1968 by Brighton based Mavis Ward a revered professional director who identified the need of theatre opportunity for the people in her city.
On her way home following directing “The Crazy Gang” at London’s Scala Rooms, Mavis was on the “milk train” home to Brighton with her close friend Brighton’s very own BAFTA award winning actress Dora Bryan OBE and Hollywood legend Dame Flora Robson, when she created Brighton Theatre Group with Dora and Flora becoming lifelong President and Vice President respectively until their deaths. White Horse Inn was to be the first production and was directed by Flora and produced by Mavis – there began a journey that continues into its fiftieth year in 2018.
The company gave such opportunity to the performing public of the town as it was and attracted a plethora of Theatrical Vice presidents including Edward Fox, Terence Stamp, Charles Dance, Brian Capron and The Mayor of The City of Brighton & Hove.
Informal patronage of the company comes in the guise of The Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Simon Cowell and until her death Julie Cowell.
Today the company enjoys the patronage of its new President Rosemary Ashe, star of the West End stage.
Today Brighton Theatre Group and its youth subsidiary company BTG Youth are considered an integral part of City life in all that it offers to its people both in performing and audiences.
Maintaining its charitable status the company is proud to have been a founding partner of the 1990’s charity Brighton Cares raising funds for HIV & AIDS with Bernard Jay, proud to have worked with The Cancer Research campaign raising funds for research into cancer and in the 2000’s raising funds for the Martlets Hospice in Hove.

It is conservatively estimated that the company has helped raise £200,000 for these charities.

Meet the Management Team

Brighton Theatre Group is run entirely by volunteers. Our management team organise everything from securing rights for each show to supporting the continued development of our performers and marketing the show. In short, they make Brighton Theatre Group possible.
